Description

1935 Bentley 3½ Litre Hooper Sports Saloon B86EF

1935 Bentley 3½ Litre Hooper Sports Saloon

Sold by us twenty years ago, and now back with us from its one owner during that time. The car is sound, handsome and well constructed, the doors closing with a satisfying ‘clunk’. However, attention is required to the paintwork, which is heavily cracked and flaking, and the engine – although running well – also needs work. The car is therefore offered as a project at a sensible price. Hooper's coachbuilding work was of a very high quality, and this is reflected in the car in various ways, one of them being the use of stainless steel for the construction of the windscreen frame and fittings. The distinctive door handles are another appealing feature. The leather work is original, needing some TLC. Despite the attention required, the car runs and drives well, with light steering, etc, and a good feel on the road, overall is correct and sound, needing some love and care, and with consideration and appropriate attention will result in a desirable and enjoyable example. Even the exhaust cutout is still in place!

Snippets: Brewing & Cricket

Dr Harold Thwaite (1883/1957) married Mabel Cheshire in 1907 before he qualified as a doctor in 1910.  His father-in-law Edward Cheshire was an Alderman of Cheshire as well as being the proprietor of Windmill Brewer, after Edward’s death in 1919 Harold became a director of Cheshire Brewery Ltd. Harold’s father Newsome Thwaite was also involved in the alcohol business being a wine merchant & the licensee & owner of several pubs such as the Birmingham Arms, Turf Inn  and Old Windmill.  During WWI Dr. Thwaite was placed in charge of the Hampton Auxiliary Hospital and after the war he joined the Children’s Hospital in Birmigham. Dr Thwaite was a keen sportsman with his favourites being cricket & fly-fishing, he became Chairman of Warwickshire Cricket in 1939 and later the Club’s President.  Like his father Harold was widowed and later remarried, Harold’s first wife Mabel died in 1946, in 1953 Harold was cited in the divorce of Evelyn Deborah Goodway (wife of the noted cricketer Cyril Clement Goodway).  Harold and Evelyn finally married each other in 1955, Harold was 72 and Evelyn 43, their marriage only last for two years before Harold’s death.   From notes in the file it would seem that between 1954/61 B86EF was with a stockbroker from Ascot before being bought by the Rev. Graham Anthony Harrington of St Andrews Vicarage in Wakefield.  The late ‘60s into the mid 80s saw the car with Basil Kift of Perthshire who once contested the Strathtay seat for Labour.  For a short period from 1983 / 1988 B86EF was owned by Bobbie McIntyre and resided at the family home of Sorn Castle which had been purchased in 1907 by Bobbie’s grandfather Thomas Walter McIntyre (1860/1920) who was involved in the shipping industry with Cunard then Maclay & McIntyre and later the Glasgow United Shipping Company.  In 1917 James McIntrye (Bobbie’s father ) was the recipient of the Military Cross and in 1919 he was awarded the Croix de Guerre.
