Phantom I Mann Egerton Drophead Dr's Coupe with dickey seat.

Beschreibung

1927 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Mann Egerton Drophead Dr's Coupe with dickey seat.

A remarkable survivor with just the one owner since 1969. The original Mann Egerton ‘three-quarter coupe’ coachwork remains in very sound condition with both doors closing with a satisfying ‘clunk’. The roof covering is still supple, serviceable and operating well although the headlining has suffered somewhat! The cabin is very spacious for two, or even three, people with a pleasing array of instruments on the dashboard. When the roof is closed and the windows up the elements can be kept at bay but when the roof is put down, an easy procedure, the sunshine can be enjoyed! A pair of P100 headlights are fitted to the Barker dipping system and there are twin side mounted spares. The original engine fires up readily, holds water and good oil pressure and the car can be driven round the yard. Could be back on the road with a light restoration or amply reward a full make over. Now back on its original registration number this is a rare opportunity to acquire an unusual and desirable coachwork configuration on a Phantom I chassis.

Snippets: Steam Engines, Racing Driver & Lawnmowers

James Arnold Petrie (1878/1959), the 1st owner of 74RF was a scion of the Petrie engineering firm of Rochdale which dates from the late 1700s with Alexander Petrie who hailed from the Scottish Lowlands. The Petrie foundry produced their first steam engine in 1818 with an 8hp engine for James King of Leavengreave at a cost of £300 (circa £25,000 today), within a few years John Petrie had patented and made the first automatic wool-washing machine, Petrie’s then began making engines & steam boilers for the local cotton mills. By the time John Petrie died (1883) he had become president of Rochdale Liberal Association, Director of Manchester & Liverpool District Bank & a prominent member of the Wesleyan Chapel. In 1888 when James Petrie was just 11 years old his father William Harry Petrie died aged just 41, in 1892 James’s grandfather James Petrie died leaving an estate of £97,000 (equivalent to circa £10million) with the majority of his estate was left, in trust, for his grandson - James Arnold Petrie. During WWII James Petrie lived just outside Attleborough and there are a couple of references to him leaving his Rolls-Royce out of use during the war plus several articles concerning a Mrs Doreen Semple obtaining £350 from James Petrie by false pretences – one wonders what Mrs Petrie had to say! After James Petrie’s death the car was bought by J. Sieff of 5 Sussex Square, London, this is quite possibly Jonathan Sieff, a scion of the Sieff family famous as being the founders of M&S. Jonathan Siefff was a racing driver and in June in 1960 he had a major crash whilst driving a Lotus at Le Mans Circuit, this may be why he only owned the PI for 12 months before it was sold to Mr McIntosh who in turn sold it to Edward Grede of Wisconsin. The family firm of Grede Foundries was formed in 1920 with William Grede (the year that his son Edward was born) when William purchased Liberty Foundry in Wauwatsoa, by 1927 Grede had acquired Spring City Foundry and in 1932 after the Great Depression a 3rd company the Milwaukee Steel Foundry was added to the fold and the 3 companies became Grede Foundries Ltd. Today the firm is still a family owned concerned with William Grede’s grandson at the helm, they have foundries in Mexico, USA, England & Switzerland. During the 1940s & 50s Edward Grede was a service manager at Briggs & Stratton where he, allegedly wrote the “best selling book of 1956” – the reason for this success that with every copy the buyer received a free lawnmower!
