The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was a luxury saloon car built from 1965 to 1980. It was the first Rolls-Royce to be constructed using a monocoque chassis and to date has the largest production volume of any Rolls-Royce. The original Shadow was 3½ inches narrower and 7 inches shorter than the Silver Cloud which it replaced but managed to offer increased passenger and luggage space thanks to more efficient packaging made possible by its design. The Silver Shadow introduced many new features such as disc brakes instead of drum brakes and independent rear suspension rather than the ageing live axle design of previous cars. It also featured a 172bhp, 6.2 litre V8 from 1965-69, and a 189bhp 6.75 litre V8 from 1970 to 1980. Both engines were mated to a Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission which came from General Motors with the exception of the pre-1970 righthand drive models which used the same 4-speed automatic gearbox as the Silver Cloud, also a General Motors unit.
